What is the difference between bursitis and tendinitis
In simple terms, bursitis and tendinitis are both conditions that cause pain and swelling in the joints, but they affect different parts of the body:
-
Bursitis happens when the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction between bones, tendons, and muscles) becomes inflamed. This usually occurs when the bursa gets irritated from repetitive movements or pressure, leading to pain and swelling around the joint. Think of it as a cushion in your joint that gets swollen and sore.
-
Tendinitis is the inflammation of a tendon (the thick cord that connects muscles to bones). It often occurs when a tendon is overused or strained from repetitive activities, like in sports or heavy lifting. It’s like the rope that connects your muscle to bone gets irritated and sore.
In short:
-
Bursitis = inflammation of the bursa (cushion)
-
Tendinitis = inflammation of the tendon (connecting rope)
Both conditions cause pain, but bursitis typically affects the area around the joint, while tendinitis affects the tendon itself.

Bursitis of the hip is the most common cause of hip pain.
If you have bursitis of the hip you should avoid hills and stairs whenever possible.
Also avoid direct pressure on the affected hip - try and sleep on the other side.
Avoid exercising on inclined surfaces and on stairs.
